On Thursday, April 10, Hartwick College will host an evening of North Indian devotional music from the Hindu and Muslim (Sufi) traditions. The event will take place from 7 – 9 p.m. in the Celebration Room of Shineman Chapel House on the Hartwick College campus.
The event, which will include performances by Dr. Krishna Kant Shukla accompanied by Ray Spiegel on Tabla and Maura Aziza Arraj on Tanbora, is free and the public is welcome to attend.
Shukla is a musician, scientist, writer, poet, and philosopher. While teaching physics and astronomy as an assistant professor, he decided to quit the family trade of academics and follow his heart into the fathomless waters of Indian Classical Music. He returned to India in 1994 to explore the roots of Indian Classical Music in the great living oral folk traditions. His musical search has led him into remote villages in the Himalayan foothills, as well as far flung and difficult to reach dwellings in the central plains.
Shukla’s repertoire includes compositions of Tyagaraja, Tulsidas, Surdas, and other poet-saints of India, as well as the musical compositions of Sufi saints. He has also been researching, recording and performing the folk songs of rural northern India, which, according to him, is an art form of unparalleled beauty which is fast becoming extinct.
This event has been funded by Hartwick College’s International Club, Music Department, and Religious Studies Department.
